The Village of Elk Grove has announced the launch of a strategic partnership with Aquify, an Exelon company, to implement a modern, high tech solution for the Village’s drinking water distribution network.
Elk Grove Village is home to the largest consolidated Business Park in North America and strives to be on the leading edge for a business-friendly approach to its customers—and this includes delivering consistent, cost-effective, and high quality services.
Aquify has specifically designed a robust and responsive analytics and monitoring system for the Village’s water distribution network, which will includes the installation of flow and pressure sensors into miles of underground water mains (underground pipes that deliver water to homes and businesses). These sensors will be used to identify and address maintenance needs and emerging issues.
Currently, when a water main starts leaking, no one knows until it rises to the surface or escalates into a more serious problem. Leaking water seeps into the ground, while pressure gradually builds up in and around the pipe until it breaks. At that point, it’s disruptive and costly to repair.
The new system, which is expected to be installed and operational by August 1, 2020, will be able to identify where and when an event occurs, so issues can be fixed or addressed proactively before they become a costly problem. As part of the Aquify service, Machine Learning (ML) analytics software, a cyber-secure network, and a professionally staffed network operations center will monitor the Village’s water system and provide analytics expertise 24/7.
In addition to identifying leaks and preventing main breaks, this modern, high-tech solution will reduce costs, enhance sustainability, improve efficiency, advance security, and provide previously unavailable insight into the operational effectiveness of the Village’s drinking water distribution network.
“We are very excited and grateful for this opportunity to work with Aquify to bring this advanced technology to our community” said Mayor Craig B. Johnson. “We look forward to utilizing state-of-the-art technologies to reduce water loss, save money, and better manage our critical drinking water infrastructure.”
Public Works Director Colby Basham explained, “The delivery of clean, fresh, reliable and affordable drinking water is one of the primary services provided by the Village, and our water system is critical for our 35,000 residents and over 5,600 businesses. By leveraging Exelon’s scale and resources, we will tap into monitoring experts, utilize modern analytical processes, and leverage high tech solutions that will benefit residents and businesses alike.”
Aquify is a wholly owned subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, one of the leading electric and gas utility companies in the US, serving more than 10 million customers.
“For more than 10 years, Exelon’s utilities have led the smart grid movement, resulting in unprecedented reliability, resilience and sustainability” said Lev Goldberg, CEO and co-founder of Aquify. “We are thrilled to help Elk Grove Village implement many of the same proven technologies and methodologies for their water system. Elk Grove Village is well known in the region for delivering exceptional municipal services in an efficient and cost-effective way and Aquify will help the Village to continue delivering on this mission”.
